Eyeballs # 15: Google Photos is the smart alternative to the Photos app
Is the default Photos app on your iPhone not enough enough? Or do you want a free backup of all your photos? Then you need to give Google Photos a chance.
Google Photos iOS provides unlimited photo storage
Google Photos has rapidly become an indispensable smartphone user app. Google's photo service is a free way to make an online backup of all your photos. For example, they are safe if your iPhone is broken, stolen or otherwise unusable. Unlike Apple's iCloud photo library, storage capacity is unlimited, although quality is slightly reduced.
By logging in with your Google Account and backing up, you can also add multiple devices to your photos. Sync your album and your screens will be instantly visible on your Mac, iPad, or other device with a browser.
Once you've made the transition to Google Photos, you can also unlock storage on your iPhone with the push of a button. All photos currently in both Google Photos and in your photo library will be deleted so that you have additional local storage.
There are a number of practical reasons for using Google Photos, but the photo service goes a long way further. For example, there is a smart search function, which includes locations, machine learning and object recognition. That way, you'll find all your cat photos when you search for 'cats' without having to label the pictures manually. The app also regularly publishes compiled albums, such as your holiday or weekend away.
The smart search feature of Google Photos
Especially this smart search function is the reason we return to the app time after time. With iOS 10 , Apple took a first step by adding Face Recognition to the Photos app, but Google's alternative is more accessible and smarter. For example, a simple search term like 'beach' already provides a useful overview of all your beach photos. Especially if your iPhone is full of thousands of photos and you've lost the list for years. At that time, manually creating albums takes too much time, while this smart search function makes it easy for your entire photo library.
Google has divided the app into three tabs: Photos are the big list of all the photos bundled in the Albums tab. Here, the app also makes suggestions for new smart albums, which are created based on your collection. Finally, Assistant is the smart part of the app. Here you use the smart search function, create your albums, collages, animations and see if other actions are needed. Thanks to AirPlay support, you easily send a picture or full album to an Apple TV to watch them on your TV.
Also, Google Photos has a simple yet handy editing feature. This allows you to quickly snap or crop an image without opening a separate app. Count on the constant stream of useful updates, and it's very difficult not to switch to Google's alternative photo app.
